A special Christmas gift: First regular ALMA observations of the Sun

The first regular observations of the Sun with ALMA have been carried out in December 2016. The observing program connected to the Solar ALMA ERC project was among the selected programs.

A Quiet Sun region and an Active Region were both observed in ALMA Band 3 and Band 6. The IRIS and Hinode space telescopes and a number of ground-based optical telescopes co-observed these targets with ALMA. The data is currently being reviewed and calibrated.
