Fredagskollokvium: Magnetic Swirls in Astrophysics

Yoshiaki Kato,Postdoctoral Fellow , ITA

Magnetic field plays an essential role for a variety of astrophysical phenomenon.  One of the extreme example is an astrophysical jet swirling plasma away more than a mega-parsec scale with its velocity up to the speed of light.  There is a lot of reason to believe the astrophysical jet is originated from an accretion disk, which is also known as one of the extreme object swirling plasma into a star, a neutron star, and a black hole.   Swirls associated with magnetic field is a key to understand the dynamics of astrophysical jets and accretion disks simultaneously. In this talk, I will give an overview of magneto-hydrodynamic simulations of magnetic swirls in my research over past ten years and their applications, and discuss near-future perspectives on magnetic swirls in astrophysics.
