Fredagskollokvium: Hardening social science: dream or reality?

Reza Lahidji, Executive Advisor, Director of Quantitative Research, International Law and Policy Institute

We start at 10:45 with a small Friday drinks' mingle!

There will be as small update from Kristine and Viggo on the running of the institute. But fear not, there will also be plenty of time for informal chat and eating of cake.

Later on, at 11:15 we have our colloquium:

Abstract: After a quick review of the epistemological foundations of the distinction between hard and soft science, we will describe the strategies that social sciences have adopted in order to conform to the cannons of scientificity in both the deductive and the inductive approaches. We will pinpoint the key roles of the notions of probability and causality in this regard, and analyse some of the achievements and shortcomings of social sciences in their quest. We will finally use a real-world example to evaluate just how hard social science has managed to become.
