Background

Most of my work is centred around modelling towards understanding the population dynamics and ecology of the large, commercially important fish stocks in the North, Norwegian and Barents Seas. I have a formal background in oceanography and employ that to study the effects of climate fluctuations on fish populations and marine ecology more generally. One of the high points of my career was to be a lead author of the IPCC Special report on ocean and the cryosphere (SROCC 2019). I presently lead a project, NorScen, funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers, which aims to increase our understanding of climate change and impacts on Nordic marine ecosystems and fisheries ressources.

Chairing the ICES Cod and Climate Change working group and serving on the international steering committee of the GLOBEC programme (www.globec.org) at earlier stages of my career broadened my scope beyond Norwegian waters, while getting the opportunity to contribute to cross-cutting review articles and books has opened my eyes to the importance of comparative studies, also between aquatic and terrestrial systems.

Although I have been working at CEES for many years I am employed by the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) as a Principal scientist. Being employed by IMR naturally leads to applied management oriented work.

Scientific pledge

I have read and promise to adhere to the NENT.
