Rebekah Alice Oomen

Academic interests

I’m a PhD student from Dalhousie University, Canada, supervised by Dr. Jeff Hutchings and based at CEES and the Institute of Marine Research Flødevigen since 2013. My current research is collaboration between these institutions that aims to understand how Atlantic cod populations are adapted to their local environments and how this affects their responses to their environment. Specifically, I’m interested in linking variation in phenotypic responses to temperature to underlying genetic variation by combining common-garden experiments with genome-wide expression patterns using RNA-sequencing. This project will help us to understand the molecular basis of thermal adaptation and plasticity and to better understand how marine fishes will respond to global climate change.

My general research interests lie in examining the environmental and ecological forces that influence genetic differentiation within species and the consequences of such intraspecific variation on the response of a species to changes in their environment. I have employed a variety of molecular and experimental techniques (e.g., mtDNA sequencing, microsatellites, 454 sequencing of immune genes, common-garden experiments) to explore these questions in a range of study systems that includes birds, mammals, and fishes.
