Background

I am an evolutionary biologist with background from empirical work on the role of hybridization and genomic conflicts in speciation. During my PhD I showed that the Italian sparrow (Passer italiae) is a hybrid species, the first example of this mode of speciation in birds. For this work I was awarded His Majesty The King's gold medal for excellence in research. Recently I have changed gears, and I am currently working on the natural ecology of plague – the most devastating pandemic disease in human history.

Several of my papers have been highlighted in the Editors' Choice-section of Science, and my work has been widely covered by international and national media, including BBC, NPR, and NRK – both in written form, on radio and on television.

Hermansen JS et al. (2014) Hybrid speciation through sorting of parental incompatibilities in Italian sparrows. Molecular Ecology, 23: 5831-5842.

This paper presents the first demonstration of hybrid speciation through sorting of parental genic incompatibilities and was highlighted at The Molecular Ecologist.

Trier CN*, Hermansen JS*, Sætre G-P & Bailey RI (2014) Evidence for mito-nuclear and sex-linked reproductive barriers between the Italian sparrow and its parent species. PLoS Genetics, 10: e1004075. *Shared first authors.

This paper presents the first demonstration of a role of sex-linked and mito-nuclear incompatibilities in separating a hybrid species from its parent taxa. It was highlighted in Science under the “Editors’ Choice”-section, and awarded the Paper of the Year Award at the Department of Biosciences, University of Oslo.

Abbott, R, ..., Hermansen, JS et al. (2013) Hybridization and SpeciationJournal of Evolutionary Biology, 26: 229-246.

Currently the leading review paper on the role of hybridization in diversification. As of September/October 2015, this Web of Science Highly Cited Paper received enough citations to place it in the top 1% of the academic field of Plant & Animal Science based on a highly cited threshold for the field and publication year.
