Project summary

Lene Martinsen has been granted a Fulbright fellowship and a Leiv Eiriksson scholarship from the Norwegian Research Council to go to Harvard University to work in the laboratory of Professor Daniel Hartl at the Department of Organismal and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University. The project is supported by Professor Nils Chr. Stenseth and CEES.

In this project Drosophila genetics will be used to test the hypothesis that the Y chromosome effects on gene expression result from blocks of simple-sequence DNA in the Y chromosome that compete for DNA-binding proteins that affect gene expression.

The project is part of an ongoing program in the Hartl laboratory concerning the role of the Y chromosome in adaptation and evolution of Drosophila species.

This novel form of gene regulation by the Y chromosome has important implications for mechanisms of gene regulation in general, as well as for understanding the role of the Y chromosome in adaptive phenotypic variation and evolution.
