Successful data science requires a mixture of statistics, computer science and domain knowledge. In DataScience@UiO, we bridge the first of these gaps by bringing statisticians and computer scientists from the Factulty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences together, and the other by bringing in industry-heavy research centers such as BigInsight and SIRIUS. In this blog-post, I want to say something about why I believe SIRIUS has a very important role to play in the current and future data science engagement at the University of Oslo.
Professor Sir Adrian Smith of the Royal Society has been appointed Institute Director for the Alan Turing Institute.
On May 21--22, the Data Science Institute at the University of Manchester will host a conference on Advances in Data Science at the Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester. Several experts have been confirmed as invited speakers.
Data Scientists are in high demand across Europe, and the University of Oslo is helping fill the gap. The Data Scientist Master's program opens in the autumn of 2018.
On the 31st of October, all BigInsight partners met at the offices of Skatteetaten to share recent developments and plans for the road ahead.
Ian Horrocks (University of Oxford) and Sylvia Richardson (Cambridge University) have received Honorary Doctorates at the University of Oslo. The two Honorary Doctors have close ties to SIRIUS and BigInsight respectively.
Almost 150 people gathered in Realfagsbiblioteket in the evening of Friday June 16th, celebrating several happy and exciting data science events at the University of Oslo.
Annual reports from the data oriented SFIs BigInsight and SIRIUS have been published on the centres' websites. Both centres have seen much promising activity during their respective first full calendar years of operation.
