Submission, assessment and disputation
Doctorates are awarded on the basis of a completed training component, a scientific thesis and a successful doctoral examination.
Submission of the thesis
You must apply to the Faculty for assessment of the thesis at least 3 months prior to the planned disputation.
The application must be sent to the Department to which you have been admitted. The training component must have been completed and passed in full before you can apply.
The following must be enclosed with the application:
- 3 drafts of the thesis
- co-author declarations if you include articles that have several co-authors
- documentation of procurement of necessary permits
- a declaration that the work has not been submitted to another institution for assessment
The supervisor will also include a proposed assessment committee
Assessment
A work that has been submitted can not be withdrawn until a final decision has been made as to whether it is acceptable for defence.
You can apply to the Faculty for permission to correct formal errors in the thesis after you have submitted your thesis for assessment. A full list of the errors that the author wishes to correct must be enclosed with the application. The application must be submitted within 8 weeks of the public defence of the thesis. The Faculty has the decision-making authority in the matter.
Assessment normally takes 3 months. There are three possible outcomes:
- The thesis is approved and you may take the doctoral exam.
- Permission is granted for minor editing and you will receive a new submission deadline of at most 6 months.
- The thesis is rejected. If so, you must wait for at least 6 months before you can submit a revised edition of the thesis for new assessment. Please note that you are only entitled to one reassessment.
Printing of the thesis
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has an agreement with the Unipub publishing house to print doctoral theses.
You deliver the final manuscript directly to Unipub with a certified order from your Department. See detailed information on printing your thesis on Unipub's Web site.
Doctoral exam
Once your thesis has been approved and made public, you will be ready to take your doctoral exam. The doctoral exam has two parts: a trial lecture and a disputation
