  • 1975 - Master degree (sivilingeniør) in Applied Physics from Norges Tekniske Høgskole in Trondheim, Norway. 
  • 1979 - Ph.D. degree in Physics from the University of California in Berkeley, Topic: Laser-induced dissociation of molecules. Advisors: Yuen-Ron Shen and Yuan-Tseh Lee (Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 1986).
  • 1979-81 - Postdoctoral Fellow at IBM Research Labs, New York, working on laser spectroscopy.
  • 1981-94 - Researcher at Televerket at Kjeller (now Telenor), working on optical fiber communication
  • since 1995 - Professor at the University of Oslo, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and at UNIK, the University Graduate Center at Kjeller.
