Academic Interests

I am presently PI of the project "Topological quantum phenomena in low dimensional systems", funded by the Norwegian research council. The project group consists of three professors (Syljuåsen, Leinaas, myself), two postdocs, two PhD students, and Master students.

My general field of research is quantum effects in systems where particles move in two (or one) dimensions. One of my main interests has been the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) and its fractionally charged, anyonic quasiparticle excitations. In particular, in collaboration with groups in Stockholm, Paris and Penn State, we have been studying the conformal field theory description of Abelian and non-Abelian FQH states and their quasiparticles. From this, a nice, unified picture of the Abelian hierarchy and its connection to the composite fermion model seems to emerge, and a new hierarchy of non-Abelian states has been proposed. Some relevant papers: Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 166805 (2009); Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 076801 (2007), arXiv:1004.3657, arXiv:1011.5365. We have just written a review of this topic for Reviews of Modern Physics (to appear in 2017).


Another main interest is occurrence of topological phases in cold atom systems. in particular we have been interested in quantum Hall-type/lowest Landau level states in atomic Bose condensates in a synthetic magnetic field, e.g. under rotation. All of the above work lies in the field of Topological Phases -- the topic of the Physics Nobel Prize 2017.

Previously, I also worked on mesoscopic systems (quantum dots and -rings), as well as carbon nanotube-based nano-electromechanical systems.
