Industrial Liaison Annual Meeting 2008

A clear recommendation was given from the partners to keep the same format on the Annual gathering in 2009. The IL-committee intends to follow this advice.

The annual meeting of 2008 was held 19 – 20th of May. The first day was held at Radisson SAS Airport Hotel, Gardermoen, with strategic and scientific presentations, and completed after a short bus ride with dinner and discussions at Rica Hotel Hamar. The second day was an excursion in the Mjøsa region. The members represented were Bayerngas Norge, BP, ConocoPhillips, Dong E&P, Exploro, Nexen Exploration, Norske Shell and Sagex Petroleum. In other words many of our new members as well as a few old attended the meeting.

After low activity in Industrial Liaison in the past due to challenges the Department of Geosciences has been facing with consolidating the merger of the three previous departments (geology, geography and geophysics) and a large workload affiliated with the “Quality reform” at the Norwegian university, the activity has been enhanced the last year or so. The number of members has increased significantly from an old time low of 8 companies two years ago to 17 at the present.

The annual meeting is an important arena both for the Department to meet the members and for the members to get insight in the activities at the Department. The first part of the meeting was concentrated on the main challenges in recruitment, replacement of senior staff retiring soon, and scientific priorities. The industrial partners were especially focused in recruitment of students in this meeting. Many interesting points were forwarded by the industry partners. These will be well taken care of in the following IL-activities.

The second part was concentrated on the scientific activities in the PEGG-group. The scientific staff and research students presented ongoing research. In addition an introduction to the geology of the Mjøsa area was given where the excursion was held the following day. The excursion, led by Johan Petter Nystuen, was attended by 13 people and sparked many interesting discussions about the structural and sedimentological development of the Mjøsa area.
