EarthFlows Seminar: Universality and avalanches in growth and depinning

There will be a seminar in the Earth Flows research group the 24th of May. Our invited speaker is Pierre Le Doussal from LPT, Ecole Normal Superieure, France. All interested in the topic of the seminar are welcome.

Seminar in Earth Flows / Invited Lecturer

Title: Universality and avalanches in growth and depinning

Speaker: Pierre Le Doussal, LPT, Ecole Normal Superieure, France

Time and place: 24 May, 12:15 PM, PGP seminar room (FV 414), 4. floor, Physics building

Abstract:

We discuss experiments where growth occurs in presence of noise and quenched disorder, and identify some universality classes.

Presentation of a field theory which predicts in details the statistics of avalanches for a class of disordered elastic systems, and show how the universality class extend to sandpile models. We discuss open questions in the field.

About the speaker

All interested are welcome to the seminar
