Procedure for disposal of chemicals

This procedure shall ensure:

  • that the disposal of hazardous chemicals and gases is according to Norwegian laws and regulations
  • that old chemicals not in use are disposed
  • that disposed chemicals are labelled correctly
  • correct sorting of disposed chemicals in storage room (K135) before declaration

The procedure is applicable for all areas where chemicals are stored and used. The procedure apply for all research and educational  activities where chemicals are used.

Responsibility

  • The Estate Management is responsible for contract with waste disposal company.
  • The IBV management is responsible for informing about this procedure and conveying the responsibilities of all users.
  • All students and staff are responsible for following this procedure.

Method

Collections

At IBV there is one annual collection of chemical waste, usually during spring semester. Information is send by e-mail in advance. Chemical waste should be delivered in room K 135 according to instruction in e-mail. Disposed chemicals should be delivered to room K135 at the designated times.

All chemicals should be disposed in their original container.

Reason for disposal

  • Chemicals with old hazard labelling (R-sentences) and orange pictograms should be disposed
  • Chemicals past its due date should be disposed
  • Chemicals without an updated MSDS. (MSDS must match product number)

Follow instructions in SDS

Image may contain: Text, Font, Line, Document. For the vast majority of chemicals and solutions we buy, the data sheet states that "Offer surplus and non-recyclable solutions to a licensed disposal company".

This means that nothing (except water) can be poured into the sink. This also applies to solutions that are not CLP-labelled or solutions made from these.

ECOonline

Chemicals that have been disposed should be entered as "utgått" in ECOonline

Large amounts of solvents/solutions

If you produce large amounts of solvents that can not be discarded through our daily waste routines, specific on-site collection routines has to be established. These routines have to be described in the SOP. The solvents/solutions should then be sorted like this:

  • Organic solvents must be sorted and labelled in the following categories. The waste should be collected in suitable containers/bottles. The containers should be labelled according to categories below.
    • Hydrocarbon waste (un-substituted; such as toluene, xylene, benzene, paraffin, cyklohexane)
    • Halogens (carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, dichloromethane, trichloroethylene, nitrobenzene, chlorobenzene)
    • Alcohols, ketones and other water soluble solvents (acetone, methanol, acetonitrile, dimethylformamide, dimethylsulfoxid, dioxane).
  • Inorganic solvents/solutions should also be handed in for destruction. Use suitable containers/bottles and label clearly and correctly with contents.

Gas

Large gas flasks: contact current UiO gas supplier for disposal.

Empty gas containers (propane, butane or metane): Can be disposed in designated waste container in the backyard of KB-hus. (NB: gas containers with toxic, corrosive or oxidising substances should bed disposed as chemical waste).
