Academic Interests

My main research interest are in speciation and fungal genomics. I have a background from plant evolution, but am currently working on evolution in fungi, mostly focusing on speciation processes and comparative genomics. One of the projects involves Serpula lacrymans and close relatives. Serpula lacrymans is a devastating destroyer of buildings in temperate regions. The full genome of S. lacrymans has been sequenced. We will sequence various individuals of S. lacrymans and close relatives for comparison of the genomes andto study the role of mating types in speciation. We also aim to get some insight into the ecological transition from growing in nature to growing in buildings in these fungi.


I’m also working on other projects in speciation on the basidiomycetes Coniophora and Trichaptum, and the ascomycete Helvella.
