Academic Interests

My main research interests are in speciation, population genomics, comparative fungal genomics, phylogeny and wood decay. Currently, I am working on speciation mechanisms in Trichaptum abietinum. A widespread bracket fungus with reproductive isolated populations. We are investigating the genomic mechanisms causing this pattern of reproductively isolated, sympatric, populations.

I am also interested in the evolutionary processes leading to functional transitions, as into efficient wood decay and into ectomycorrhizal symbiosis. In particular we have been investigating brown rot decay in Serpula lacrymans, a devastating destroyer of wood in buildings in temperate regions. The adaptation to a high alpine climate and a nitrogen limited habitat may have been key to the adaptation to the built environment.

I am also working on other projects as systematics in the ascomycete family Helvellaceae, fungal diversity in the built environment, fungal response to modified wood, and conservation biology of rare fungal wood decay species.
