Academic Interests

I try to understand how animals evolved from their single-celled ancestors - one of the greatest events in evolution. In my current project we investigate the significance of regulatory genetic elements in the evolution of complex animal body plans from single celled choanozoans. 

Other projects I am involved in focus on the evolution and ecology of protists and their transition between different aquatic habitats. I have investigated the freshwater diversity of predominantly marine protist groups such as Telonemia, Perkinsea, and Haptophytes. And I have also studied the diversity of Radiolarians and their associated symbionts.

Methods I am using includes transcriptome and gene expression analyses, single cell genome and transcriptome amplification, environmental sequencing and phylogenetics.
