Research interests

My research is centered on radical-proteins, metalloproteins, oxygen activation, radical/electron transfer, redoxproteins, protein structure combined with functional and advanced spectroscopic studies. I study several protein cofactors with iron (in e.g. heme protein, non heme iron proteins); copper proteins; manganese proteins; cobalt substituted protein; flavin and biopterin containing proteins; tyrosyl-radicals; with enzymatic, cryobiochemical, optical and magnetic methods. My group performs 3D structure determination by X-ray crystallography together with single-crystal light absorption and Raman spectroscopy. I have edited a book titled “Ribonucleotide reductase” and reviews.

Background

After undergraduate studies at Stockholm University, I got my Docteur d’Université degree in cryobiochemistry at INSERM U128/University Montpellier 2. Then I was 7.5 years at University of Minnesota, 2.5 years at Stockholm University, 3.5 years at University of Bergen.  Finally, I became full Professor of Physical Biochemistry at University of Oslo May 1994 at the Department of Biochemistry. I have studied metalloproteins with several magnetic methods like electron paramagnetic resonance (9-285 GHz), (resonance) Raman, Mössbauer, magnetic circular dichroism, paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy. I had a Fulbright grant for visit Department of Chemistry, Stanford University, 2003-2004 during my sabbatical leave.
