Academic interests

Practice-based studies of innovation, learning and change. This is particularly related to the introduction of new technologies and new practices in the health care sector. A central topic in his research is why breakthroughs in knowledge that could lead to better patient treatment often remain local rather than become translated into medical practice elsewhere. Hence, he addresses issues like cross-disciplinary collaboration, the role of boundaries (professional, organisational and others), power, change management and learning in his research.

In addition to studying health care he has also been involved in research on regional innovation, innovation processes in the food industry, and in research on learning and power relations in higher education.

Bjørn Erik is an Associate Fellow at IKON Research Unit, Warwick Business School (http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/wbs/research/ikon/), and is a research fellow at the Intervention Centre at Oslo University Hospital (www.ivs.no).

Teaching

Bjørn Erik is involved in the Executive Master Program at IFI: http://www.uio.no/studier/program/it-ledelse-master/ He also has a role in the following two courses:

ITLED 4030 - IT, organisasjon og forretningsforståelse

INF 5580 - masterseminar i information systems

He is an examiner and guest lecturer at various bachelor and master courses in innovation and entrepreneurship at BI Norwegian Business School. He is also an external examiner on courses in research methods at Oslo School of Management, and has given several guest lectures at various master courses at the University of Tromsø.

Higher education and employment history

Bjørn Erik is an organisational sociologist (cand.polit in 2001) and holds a PhD (2009) from the University of Oslo. In the period 2000-2007 he was employed as a research fellow at the cross-disciplinary R&D department the Intervention Centre, Oslo University Hospital. He has also been employed at BI Norwegian Business School (2006) and the University of Oslo (2005-2006).

In 2012 Bjørn Erik was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar  at UC Berkeley (http://www.fulbright.no/en/destination_usa/grantee_experiences/previous_grantees/), in 2006 a visiting scholar with the IKON research group at Warwick Business School (http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/wbs/research/ikon/) and in 2005 a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley (http://www.berkeley.edu/index.html)).

Since 2007 he has been working as a Management Consultant for EY Advisory, and he is a member of  the ”People and Organisational Change” subject matter group.
