Research areas

The research focus of the Networks and Distributed systems (ND) group is devising architectures and paradigms for future distributed applications and services. Our areas of interest include:

  • Interconnection networks: tightly coupled networks with extreme requirements to throughput, latency and reliability
  • Adaptation middleware: middleware support for context-aware QoS sensitive applications (mobility, multimedia, Cloud Computing)
  • Distribution middleware: publish-subscribe and content delivery in large-scale heterogeneous settings
  • Dependability middleware: replication and transactional middleware for building highly available systems, modeling techniques for characterization
  • Improving the Internet transport layer
  • Routing resilience, and network resilience in general
  • Wireless sensor networks

The ND group strives to apply research results obtained in the above areas to real-life applications by collaborating with IT companies (such as FAST Search and Transfer/Microsoft, IBM, and Telenor) and contributing to task forces behind Future Internet (IRTF and IETF). We emphasize innovation: Lividi is an example of ND commercialization endeavors based on produced research results.
