Social Responsible ICT-Based Crowdsourcing Tools

The iResponse project will develop and study social responsible ICT-based crowdsourcing tools for urban environmental research and decision-making processes based on citizen participation and engagement (crowdsourcing).

In the project, there is a need to develop/adapt crowdsourcing tools following the principles of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) for three case studies:

Case I: Storm water management (NIVA)

Developing an interactive platform to get citizens input to address storm water challenges through building Blue-Green Infrastructures (BGI)

Case II:  Air pollution as a result of wood consumption for heating (NILU)

Developing an application (mobile app/web) to collect data about in-door wood burning so as to estimate particulate emissions and

Case III: Urban planning (Aalto University)

Exploring the use of GIS based participation tool to support urban planning and decision making

The project is a consortium of research institutions and universities including Norwegian Institute of Air Research (NILU), Norwegian Institute of Water Research (NIVA), Norwegian Consumer Research, Netlife research, Aalto University and University of Oslo.

There are interesting master topics in the project including the possibility of software coding. Some of the areas are described below. If you have any questions or should you need clarifications of the case studies or topics, please contact Selamawit Fossum, email or Ole Hanseth, email

1) Collecting user requirements and developing a crowdsourcing prototype for storm water management.

2) Exploring the use of sensors/apps for household self-reporting of wood consumption

3) Identifying motivating factors for engaging citizens in crowdsourcing platforms.

4) Identifying different data sources for environmental monitoring and proposing integration strategies.
