Academic Interests and Research

My main interest is to study the chemistry and physics of Super-heavy Elements (SHEs). This is pure basic research where we work on the very limit of the periodic table. Currently I'm also deeply involved in hydrometallurgy research, where we are looking for new ways to handle the more and more complex minerals and environmental requirements facing the hydrometallurgical industry, including "urban mining" and recovery of metals from waste. I also have a special interest in nuclear detectors and acquisition systems.

Teaching

Courses that I'm heading and performing most of the teaching:

In addition I'm heading the Nuclear Chemistry Teaching Section and participating in teaching several other courses (KJM 3700,..).

Background

I obtained my PhD in Nuclear Chemistry at the University of Oslo in May 1995. Since then I've been employed at the Department of Chemistry and working with Nuclear and Radiochemistry research and teaching. My current research focus is on chemical studies of Super-heavy Elements and on Hydrometallurgy. In addition I've a deep interest in teaching, in particular with how modern e-learning techniques can help improve the students learning outcome. Please follow this link for more details.

Appointments

I'm group leader for the Nuclear Chemistry Research Group at the Department.

I'm the Norwegian representative on behalf of the Norwegian Chemical Society to the Division of Nuclear and Radiochemistry (DNRC) in the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS). Currently I'm appointed Chair of this Division.

I'm appointed chair of the Norwegian Hydrometallurgy nettwork.

Collaboration

My most active research collaborations are currently with:

  • Super-heavy Element Research Group at RIKEN, Japan (H. Haba et al.)
  • Department of Nuclear Chemistry, CTU, Prague (J. John et al.)
  • GSI and Univ. Mainz Super-heavy Element Research Group (C. Düllmann et al.)
  • Institute for Energy Technology at Kjeller, Norway (L. Stavsetra et al.)
  • SINTEF research institute, Trondheim (Ana-Maria Martinez et al.)
  • Our Hydromet industry partners Boliden, Odda; Glencore, Kristiansand; Yara Porsgrunn
