MLS@UIO

Our collaborating group: "The University of Oslo Biomolecular Structure Platform" is inviting research groups from the University of Oslo to participate in collaborative research in the first six months of 2011 - in connection with partial funding from MLS@UIO.

The platform is offering collaborative research in three distinct but related scientific areas.

Area one: Protein crystallization and X-ray crystallographic structure determination.
Please contact either: Ute Krengel (ute.krengel[at]kjemi.uio.no) for questions and enquiries regarding protein crystallization and structure determination. Or please contact: Carl Henrik Gørbitz (c.h.gorbitz[at]kjemi.uio.no) for questions and enquiries regarding small protein and peptide crystallization and structure determination.  Gørbitz can also be contacted for structure determination of all other classes of small organic compounds - but this is outside the scope of the MLSUIO sponsored service.

Area two: Protein and peptide production and purification:
Please contact: Jon Nissen-Meyer (jon.nissen-meyer[at]imbv.uio.no) due to the recent decease of  William Davies for questions and enquiries concerning genetic over expression production and purification of labeled and non-labeled peptides and proteins. The service is limited to providing lab facilities and advice.

Area three: NMR-spectroscopic structure determination:
Please contact: Per Eugen Kristiansen (p.e.kristiansen[at]imbv.uio.no) for questions and enquiries concerning structure determination of peptides and proteins on the Bruker AVII600 NMR spectrometer.  Please state explicitly in you first phone call/e-mail, when making contact, that you want a true collaborative project with co-authorship for P.E. Kristiansen on all publications resulting from the NMR-investigations.

Please contact: Frode Rise (frode.rise[at]kjemi.uio.no) for questions and enquiries about collaborative structure determination of all other classes of biomolecules under the "MLSUIO umbrella".  Please state explicitly in you first phone call/e-mail, when making contact, that you want a true collaborative project with co-authorship for F. Rise  on all publications resulting from the NMR-investigations.

Rise can also be contacted by users from outside the University of Oslo system for collaborative structure determination of all  classes of organic molecules including peptides and small proteins - but this is outside the scope of the MLSUIO arrangement.  Please state explicitly in you first phone call/e-mail, when making contact, that you want a true collaborative project with co-authorship for F. Rise  on all publications resulting from the NMR-investigations.  If you prefer to purchase a purely commercial service - with no obligations concerning co-publicatiion of the results please see Services. for more information about this option.

Pricing and terms of the "MLS@UIO" service:
An initial consultation of one hour is of course free of charge.  During this meeting details on the collaborative projects will be discussed and hopefully agreed upon.

X-ray and NMR structure determination under the MLS umbrella is costing 100 NOK (+ 25 % VAT, where applicable) pr hour for the running of the instrument in question. If the work results in publications the X-ray- and NMR academic staff will be co-authors on the publications. The hourly instrument pricing of 100 NOK (+25 % VAT, where applicable) is subsidized heavily by MLS.  Potential collaborators should be aware that the X-ray crystallography- and NMR spectroscopy laboratories are having a limited engineering work capacity due to personnel limitations and it is expected that personnel (master students, Ph.D. students or post doctoral students) from the external laboratory is joining our labratories to learn and gain valuable experience from the permanent personnel in our laboratories. The academic personell in our laboratories will then formally take on the positions as co-supervisors of the guest student(s). The external projects must also be of interest to the academic staff at our laboratories since the external projects do compete with internally generated projects.

When using NMR instruments at the University of Oslo NMR Center - other than the AVII600 instrument other terms, conditions and prices does apply

Screening of crystallization conditions. We are happy to give advice and suggestions concerning the  screening of crystallization conditions and provide help, supplies and  facilities for researchers coming to our lab to set up protein  crystallization experiments. We further provide assistance with in-house  or remote acquisition of X-ray data and with X-ray data analysis and  structure determination, refinement and analysis. We are, however,  currently limited in providing more extensive services due to the lack  of technical support, and rely on interested researchers actively taking part in the experiments.

Peptide and protein production and purification service:   Potential customers/collaborators should be aware that the protein production and purification laboratory has currently no working capacity due to personnel limitations and it is expected that personnel (master students, Ph.D. students or post doctoral students) from the custome/collaborator is coming to the protein production and purification laboratory to perform the work. Thus the expression & purification-related services are limited to providing access to the lab facilities and some advice.
