Callaghan with two vectors in the xy plane
Published Apr 9, 2012 04:36 PM

The International Society for Magnetic Resonance writes on its web page: http://www.ismar.org/ It is with great sadness that ISMAR announces that Sir Paul Callaghan died from cancer March 24, 2012 at the age of only 64. He was an eminent figure in science in New Zealand and in NMR of materials. He is most known for his pioneering work combining rheology and NMR to unravel the flow behaviour of complex systems such as liquid crystals and polymer melts. These developments reach far beyond NMR and clearly represent landmarks of our field. His book on NMR Microscopy is a classic. His achievements have been recognized by numerous honours, prizes, and recognitions throughout the world.

Dear 5250 / 9250 participants - spring 2012. The obligatory laboratory/colloquies are held on Mondays and Tuesday for up to 15 weeks, starting February 6th. Each of you will be working at an nmr spectrometer only one day per week. You will be working in pairs setting up and executing a whole bunch of nmr experiments on the spectrometer: AVII400, DRX500 and AVII600. You will be rotated between the three instruments. We will discuss theory and practical aspects in the nmr rooms. Up to 6 persons will work on Mondays and up to 6 persons on Tuesdays. The work starts at 0900 AM and stops at 17.00 (05.00 PM) but your actual experiment might run until next morning when you will come in and stop the experiment.

In case Mondays or Tuesdays are in conflict with your teaching obligations as a PhD student the Monday groups or the Tuesday groups will be moved to Fridays if all assigned to that day do agree.

KJM 9250 contain some more advanced NMR experiments and a wider theoretical curriculum (see below here).  Thanks to efforts in our administration KJM 5250 might also be part of a Bachelor curriculum!  Students wanting this must apply to get KJM 5250 included in their Bachelor curriculum.  How to do this is described here: http://www.mn.uio.no/studier/opptak/enkeltemner-master.html  The application should be sent by e-mail to: studieinfo@kjemi.uio.no

Module 1 (nmr)  in KJM-MENA4010 starts at 09.00 AM Thursday January 19. and runs thru Wednesday February 1.  New users are adviced to participate.

The AVII400 and DRX500 nmr spectrometers are reserved for this course 14 days.

Published Nov 23, 2011 02:42 PM

The three nmr instruments AV600, AVII400 and DRX500 are reserved for KJM9250 from Monday February 6th every Monday and Tuesday the whole sping semester of 2012 for KJM9250. Iconnmr on AVII400 will be shut off on Mondays at 0900 and restarted on Wednesday morning 0900 or shortly thereafter every normal working week. Three instruments two weekdays will enable 12 participants. The number of reserved instrument(days)/week will be reduced with one instrument day pr week for each fewer participant pairs.

KJM5250 / KJM9250 spring 2012.  The course code is changed to KJM9250.  KJM9250 will run in the spring of 2012 if 5 or more PhD students register. If less than 5 PhD students do register the course will be cancelled in 2012 and run next time in the spring of 2014. Lectures will most likely start on Wednesday February 1st. The intertwined practical and theoretical colloquiums in the NMR Center will start on Monday February 6th and run the whole semester. Students will work in pairs of two and two. Two or three NMR instruments will be used each day for up to two/three days a week which means a maximum of 12 students can participate. Each of you will use an nmr instrument one whole day each week, but you can leave the instrument now and then when acquisitions are going on. According to information received the course can now only be taken by PhD students and and rumors says that master students are forbidden to take the course unless they register the course as a "special course" in their curriculum.

Free software for mac, iphone and ipad By John Georg Seland

Do you have a mac, an iphone or an ipad, and you are interested in understanding more of the NMR theory? Then you should check out the software called Insensitive. It connects the theory of the vector model, product operators and density matrix, and generates spectra based on different spin systems and pulse sequences. It is really great! Please be aware that our nmr tube holders/spinners are extremly costly. Each of them do cost 95 Euro + 25 % VAT which is about 900 NOK for each of them.  Please do not spill chemicals on them. They are for instance harmed  by ethanol or acetone.  Please wash your hands and remove dirty gloves from the laboratories before touching a spinner. A bottle of isopropanol will soon be placed in the hood. You can use this to clean dirty spinners.  Dirty spinners do also pollute the inner part of the NMR magnets giving rise to lots of unnecessary work. Dirty spinners are moving erratically - giving rise to artefacts in the spectra. Please also do not drop them on the floor. They are fragile.

Magnetresonsans-spektroskopi sender kraftige magnetfelt inn i atomer.

June 12 2011 "gasworld" reported about upcoming helium supply shortages:  Thanks to insider information, gasworld can exclusively reveal that the world is again dealing with a shortage of helium. Jane Dawson explores the issue further. Sources from within the heart of the industrial gases community have alerted gasworld to a current and worsening helium shortage. The deficit of helium is a subject that has received significant media coverage for over a year, but as we discovered the issue is a lot more imminent than previously realised. Indeed, according to industry sources the outlook is less than rosy, with informants predicting, “a sustained period of tight supply at the best of times and helium shortages during times of plant outages.”  Continue reading at: http://www.gasworld.com/news.php?a=5727

As usual the NMR- Center does not have money to hire personnel during the summer vacation period.  The users and the instruments are regretfully left to care for themselves. Luckily funds for filling liquid nitrogen on each and every Wednesdays  are available.

Recently many of our nmr-pcs have restarted in the night.  When crashing the experiments are of course corrupted and the expensive electronics might as well be damaged. Master students, Ph.D. students and post docs working under time constraints are regretfully delayed.
