High-Power Solid State Lithium Batteries (completed)

This project focuses on improving the safety and the performance of lithium ion secondary batteries by developing Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) thin film processes for solid-state electrolyte materials. The use of ALD enables fabrication of three-dimensional battery structures that have higher energy and power densities per footprint area than planar battery structures.

About the project

The main objective of this project is to develop thin film technology for Li-conducting solid electrolytes that will open for major advances in Li-batteries towards their final incorporation in hybrid vehicles or zero emission technology. The background for this research and development opportunity is a rather unique combination of competences from academia and industry. The University of Oslo will by use of its Atomic Layer Deposition methodology and INTEX/Patinor through their nanostructured amorphous carbon packaging and protective coatings, focus joint efforts on integrating thin Li-conducting oxide films  into the very structure of flat Li-batteries. Once successful, this will open up, first for microbattery applications, later for automotive applications. The project is performed in collaboration between Norwegian and US research/industry communities.

Objectives

The main objective is to develop thin Li-conducting electrolytes that will enable novel Li-battery technology for multiple applications, including automotive.
