Searching for variations in fundamental constants using Hubble Space Telescope observations of white dwarfs

Searching for variations in fundamental constants provide an important
test of grand unification theories.  White dwarf spectra provide a direct
means of exploring whether fundamental constants can vary in the
presence of strong gravitational fields, as some theories predict.  I will
present recent and ongoing work, based on comparing laboratory
measurements with Hubble Space Telescope spectra that hint at a
possible dependence.
