Abstract:

Recent developments in the galaxy rotation studies

Rotation is one of the fundamental concepts in physics. However, the rotation of galaxies had been much more tricky to measure than their size, shape, color, or luminosity. Only recently, large-scale surveys of the kinematics of galaxies became feasible owing to the advances in integral-field unit / multi-object spectrograph instruments. In this talk, I will introduce some numerical efforts to better understand the galaxy evolution in response to the recent observations of galaxy rotation. Of particular interest in this talk is the rotation of early-type galaxies where their formation histories might be hiding in. I will also discuss the prospect of recent/ongoing kinematic surveys of galaxies from the viewpoint of numerical simulations.
