Fredagskollokvium: Eirik Endeve: Recent Simulations of Neutrino-Driven Core-Collapse Supernova Explosions

It has been nearly fifty years since Colgate & White (1966, ApJ, 143, 626) first proposed that core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) may be neutrino-driven, and current investigations of the CCSN explosion mechanism still center around this idea. However, spherically symmetric models with high physical fidelity generally fail to produce explosions. Recent work by the "Oak Ridge" Group (Bruenn et al. 2013, ApJ, 767, L6) demonstrates that neutrino-driven CCSN explosions - with explosion energies in rough agreement with observations - can be obtained in multi-dimensional neutrino-radiation hydrodynamics simulations. In the context of these simulations, I will discuss the role of neutrino radiation transport in CCSNe and the important role of multi-dimensional fluid flows in facilitating the explosions.
