CEES Chair Speaks to Party Leaders about Basic Science
Nils Chr. Stenseth spoke at the research politics seminar 'Research for the Future – Parliamentary Elections 2013'
The Norwegian Association of Researchers (Forskerforbundet) gathered on 6th November the leaders of the top seven political parties to take part in a seminar on the future of research and research policy in Norway. As part of this, CEES chair and current president of The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, Nils Chr. Stenseth, gave a speech entitled 'Basic science as a prerequisite for innovation' ('Grunnforskning som forutsetning for innovasjon'). In it, Prof. Stenseth outlined the importance of basic science in developing new technologies and insights. He highlighted the importance of 'curiosity driven science', but also of scientific uncertainty.
He finished his presentation outlining his wish for scientific policy to be an election issue in 2013, and for the establishment of a Norwegian Chief Science Advisor. He argued that this would result in a stronger Norwegian basic science that will lead to a stronger knowledge society.
