CEES Extra seminar I: Does evolution optimise?

It is a widespread misconception that evolution by natural selection necessarily maximises some quantity like the lifetime reproductive success. In this talk I will discuss the problem of when evolution optimises within the framework of adaptive dynamics using the metaphor of the rock-scissors-paper game.
