Evolution and differentiation in the oceans – panmixia revisited?

Friday seminar by Juha Merliä

Abstract

In this talk, I will reflect upon the issue of population differentiation and adaptation in the oceans, commonly considered as open habitats with few obvious physical barriers to migration and gene flow. My focus will be levels and patterns of genetic differentiation, and in particular, their underlying causes. I draw my examples mostly from studies of oceanic fishes, and above all, from our own studies of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). I probably cannot avoid saying something about nine-spined sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius) too, probably the coolest fish in the world.
