Research interest

My main research focus is on fundamental studies of zeolite catalysis, especially the conversion of methanol to hydrocarbons, and more recently the direct conversion of methane to methanol using metal loaded zeolites. Another activity is related to the influence of zeolite catalyst crystal morphology and the development of nanostructured zeolites.

My research approach can be summarized as follows:

  • Synthesis, modification, and characterization of nanoporous catalysts to prepare model materials with well-defined properties
  • Mechanistic investigations using kinetic analysis, isotopic labeling, and quantum chemical methods
  • Operando and in situ characterization using lab and synchrotron based spectroscopy combined with simulations

Short bio

Dr Stian Svelle (born 1975) is Professor at the University of Oslo since 2013. I received my PhD from the same institution in 2004. I have had research visits/sabbaticals to the Humboldt University in Berlin and the Danish company Haldor Topsøe A/S. I have supervised 7 PhD candidates and 5 master student to graduation. I have been project leader/PI for a MCA FP7-ITN-European Industrial Doctorate project and three projects funded by the Research Council of Norway.

I am involved in the teaching in physical chemistry, and I am the leader of the PhD program at the Department of Chemistry. I am extensively involved in outreach and dissemination activities within the framework of the Norwegian Chemical Society. I am currently co-author of 120 accepted publications in international refereed journals, including three book chapters. I have 7621 citations in the ISI database (excluding self citations), resulting in an h-index of 46.
