Background

My professional background is "molecular biology by training and immunology by practice”. I did my doctorate at Columbia University, New York, in 1994 on transcriptional regulation and intracellular signal transduction. From 1994 to 2012 I worked at Rikshospitalet and The medical faculty as postdoc, researcher, 1.amanuensis and professor and researched immunology, primarily the intestinal antibody system. From 2007 to 2012, I was a group leader at the Center for Immune Regulation (CIR), a CoE led by Ludvig Sollid. From 2009, I was also head of the Department of Molecular Biosciences and in 2013 I left CIR to become head of the Department of Biosciences (IBV). From 2016 to the summer of 2017, I was director of UiO:Life Sciences and after that, until February 2019, dean of research at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Since March 2019 I am back at IBV, teaching and doing research.

Research

When I returned to IBV as professor, I joined the convergence environment COMPARE, which is led by Kjetill Jakobsen. In COMPARE, immunologists from the medical school collaborate with evolutionary biologists from basic biology to understand the unique immune system of Atlantic cod and the adaptations made by the codfishes, as compensation for a “genetic deficiency”. When the same deficiency occurs in humans, it results in a severe immune deficiency, which is only treatable by bone marrow transplantation. In 2020 we started an RCN-funded researcher project, VACSACOD, to advance experimental immunology and vaccinology in Atlantic cod.

Teaching

I teach immunology at the PhD-, masters- and upper bachelor level and cell biology and molecular biology to first semester bachelor students. Together with Kirsten Borse Haraldsen at the science library, I took the initiative to establish iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) as a Master's course at UiO in 2014, where an interdisciplinary team will solve a society challenge using synthetic biology (and travel to Boston to compete against teams from all over world). Together with Tone Fredsvik Gregers at the School Laboratory for Biology, I took the initiative that Norway joined the International Biology Olympiad for High School Students in 2015.  Since 2016, I have taught the Norwegian participants and have been a jury member in the international finals.

Political interests

I strongly support the university's independence and disagree with those who believe our primary mission is to be an "engine" for economic growth in society. The two most important "products" we, as an international research faculty, provide are long-term basic research and candidates for other jobs in society. Basic research is of great value because it satisfies our quest for new knowledge, our inherent curiosity, and it is of great value because spin-off from basic research provides practical solutions that benefits society and we all enjoy. The latter are often called innovations. I believe UiO’s two most important primary tasks are basic research and education, and a close link between research and education enriches both and should be a core value for the university. At the same time, we shall facilitate innovation and participate in innovation work. This is both a duty and a pleasure because it can make the job more meaningful to see that the knowledge we generate impacts society. Finally yet importantly, we shall convey knowledge to society and ensure that knowledge generated by us and by other national and international researchers is used as foundation for important decisions and in innovations.
