Academic interest

Molecular microbiology with emphasis on host-pathogen interactions of bacterial species causing disease in humans and in fish species important for aquaculture. We mainly study the human pathogen Vibrio cholerae and the fish pathogens Francisella noatunensis, Piscirickettsia salmonis and Yersinia ruckeri. For our research we use zebrafish, both embryos and adults, in addition to mice as model organisms.

We try to translate our basic research into applied sciences. We have a research project for the use of extracellular vesicles, secreted from the bacterial body, as a vaccine for fish in aquaculture. We collaborate with several industrial partners within the fish farming industry.

We are also interested in studies within antimicrobial resistance development and the effect the use of antimicrobials has on the gut microbiome and the environment. We collaborate with several partners in investigations of potentially new antimicrobials. Here we explore, amongst others, the large potential of Norways marine resources such as marine microalgae.
