00:00:03.500 --> 00:00:11.000
 Hello! My name is Hedvig Nordeng. I'm a professor at the
 School of Pharmacy at the University of Oslo, Norway.

00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:23.400
 Today, I'd like to present the results from our study on prenatal exposure
 to paracetamol and the consequences for long term neurodevelopment.

00:00:23.400 --> 00:00:26.300
 Why is this important?

00:00:26.300 --> 00:00:31.200
 First of all, paracetamol is one of the most
 frequently used medications in pregnancy.

00:00:31.200 --> 00:00:40.200
 Despite this, very few studies have investigated the
 potential long term consequences on neurodevelopment.

00:00:40.200 --> 00:00:47.800
 How did we do this? We used data from the
 Norwegian Mother and Child cohort study, –

00:00:47.800 --> 00:00:55.600
 a large perspective birth cohort under the
 National Institute of Public Health in Norway.

00:00:55.600 --> 00:01:05.750
 In this study, we included almost 3,000 sibling pairs to
 assess whether prenatal exposure to paracetamol –

00:01:05.750 --> 00:01:13.500
 could have an impact on psychomotor development,
 behavior and temperament in three-year-old children.

00:01:13.500 --> 00:01:22.700
 By comparing siblings prenatally exposed to
 paracetamol with their unexposed siblings, –

00:01:22.700 --> 00:01:33.150
 we could control for a range of shared genetic and
 environmental factors, as they have the same parents.

00:01:33.150 --> 00:01:43.000
 This offers an important advantage over other
 studies, where they compare unrelated individuals.

00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:57.100
 In addition, we adjusted for several other important factors, like
 infections, fever, commodication, smoking and alcohol use during pregnancy.

00:01:57.100 --> 00:01:59.100
 So what did we find?

00:01:59.100 --> 00:02:08.900
 We found that children who had been prenatally
 exposed to paracetamol for more than 28 days –

00:02:08.900 --> 00:02:22.300
 showed significantly poorer gross motor development, poorer communication
 skills, and also more behavioral problems compared to their unexposed siblings.

00:02:22.300 --> 00:02:32.200
 To investigate whether this could be due to
 the underlying illness or to the drug itself, –

00:02:32.200 --> 00:02:40.200
 we reran our analysis and compared it to
 another kind of analgesic, namely ibuprofen.

00:02:40.200 --> 00:02:46.900
 However, we did not find any similar negative results for this drug.

00:02:46.900 --> 00:03:01.250
 This really strengthens our concern that long term use of paracetamol
 in pregnancy might have a negative impact on child neurodevelopment.

00:03:01.250 --> 00:03:09.200
 To conclude, our results indicate that we should be
 restrictive with the use of paracetamol in pregnancy.

00:03:09.200 --> 00:03:18.300
 However, it is very unlikely that short term use or
 occasional use of paracetamol may be harmful.

00:03:18.300 --> 00:03:20.300
 Thank you!
