Professor emeritus Terje E. Michaelsen

He has a PhD in immunology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo (1975).

He is working in molecular and cellular immunology with the main focus on structure and function studies on human and mouse immunoglobulin including their interaction and cooperation with the innate immune system such as complement and phagocytic as well as cytotoxic immune cells. Many different test systems have been developed for this study involving the complement system and immune cells. These in vitro test systems have been adopted in order to study the interaction of polysaccharides purified from medicinal plants from Africa and the immune system of mouse and human. The studies will improve the understanding of immunological interaction mechanisms including receptor elucidation and cytokine network engaged between bio active polysaccharide and the immune system and thereby predict possible immune protective effects of medicinal plants from Africa.

He has published more than 200 articles in international scientific journals.
