Mutual understanding in conversations in a second language

Jan Svennevig from the Institutt for lingvistiske og nordiske studier at the UiO, will tell us more about how to understand each other in a second language.

More and more people communicate on a daily basis in a language that is not their mother tongue. How do participants in such conversations make sure they understand each other? This presentation will focus on some conversational techniques used to prevent understanding problems, such as repetition, reformulation and clarification questions.  It will also show some examples of how participants deal with problems such as misunderstanding and non-comprehension. The examples are from real life interactions between speakers of Norwegian as a first and as a second language in various workplace settings.
