Sustainable food packaging for increased shelf-life

Food industry seeks a viable multifunctional packaging that responds to the different actors involved in the value chain of food products. Introducing sustainable materials technology and reducing food waste are two main challenges.
The project NanoBarrier aimed to improve and modify bioplastics using nanotechnology to boost properties to match traditional oil-based plastics. Partners produced multifunctional, extended shelf-life biopolymer food packaging by combining materials technology with processing technologies.
In the project, SINTEF developed a coating material giving a reduction in oxygen permeation by up to a factor 4.
