Self-healing ceramic membranes

Truls Norby from the Department of Chemistry (UiO) will talk about the SEALEM project. 

Dense ceramic membranes offer a range of properties related to ion transport at high temperatures: Solid-state electrolytes for fuel cells and steam electrolysers and mixed ion electron conducting selective gas permeation membranes for various carbon capture processes. However, large applications require large areas of thin membranes, vulnerable to pinholes and cracks from manufacturing and thermal stresses. The SEALEM project explores principles and mechanisms for self-healing of such defects, which may revolutionise lifetime and reliability of ceramic membranes and reduce manufacturing costs.
