There are many ways that nature crushes rocks. Inside earthquake fault gouges, the crushed fragments have a power law distribution. In rock avalanches, debris flows, snow avalanches and pyroclastic flows, we often measure log-normal grainsize distributions. Here I'll present possibly the simplest numerical model that can explain why we get different fragments in these two scenarios.
