How big things are (inside avalanches)
Benjy Marks, postdoc at Physics Department, will present some of PhD work on "How big things are (inside avalanches)"
There are many ways that nature crushes rocks. Inside earthquake fault gouges, the crushed fragments have a power law distribution. In rock avalanches, debris flows, snow avalanches and pyroclastic flows, we often measure log-normal grainsize distributions. Here I'll present possibly the simplest numerical model that can explain why we get different fragments in these two scenarios.
