Can quantum-gravitational effects be observed in the cosmic microwave background?

Claus Kiefer, University of Cologne

Weekly Theory Seminar.

In any approach to quantum gravity, it is crucial to search for observational effects. In my talk, I discuss how quantum-gravitational contributions to the anisotropy spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) arise in the framework of quantum geometrodynamics. After giving a general introduction to quantum gravity and quantum cosmology, I address one class of models in detail: the scenario of slow-roll inflation for the early universe. I derive concrete effects for the CMB power spectrum and discuss their relevance for future observations.
