Seminar by Erik Schytt Mannerfelt, Doctoral Research Fellow, Dept of Geosciences, UiO.
The emergence of historical glacier elevation change datasets on regional scales.
Abstract: Historical (pre-1950s) geodetic mass balance estimates found a large part of the basis for how we perceive glacier change over the 20th century. But most historical estimates are constrained to single or a select few glaciers. In 2022, two papers came out with regional reconstructions from Svalbard in 1936 (~1600 glaciers; Geyman et al., 2022) and Switzerland in 1931 (~1400 glaciers; Mannerfelt et al., 2022), showing a significant step forward in our understanding of the past. I will present how these datasets were made, and suggest ideas for what they can be used for other than simply presenting volume change. I hope a discussion can ensue on further uses, where we can pave the way forward together!
The talk is in Aud 2 in the Geology Building. It is also possible to follow at Zoom.
Videolink to the lecture will be sent to the mailinglists alle@geo and geohyd-info@geo. If you want to subscribe to the geohyd-info@geo list send an email to Anita.
