Oslo joint seminar in atmospheric, ocean and climate science, Maria Sand

Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU. This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field. All seminars will be held on Thursdays (Noon -1pm) and lunch (sandwiches) will be served on a “first-come-first-served”-basis.

Speaker: Maria Sand (Cicero)

Title: Black Carbon in the Arctic: May the forcing be with you
Abstract: Black Carbon aerosols comprise around 10 % of PM2.5 mass in ambient air, and the Arctic region covers less than 6 % of the Earth. For being a very small region, and a very tiny aerosol, both has received a disproportionate amount of research in the last decades. In this talk I will go through some of this research, and what lead  to the first collective goal to reduce black carbon emissions by the Arctic States in the 2017 Fairbanks declaration. I will discuss the multiple ways Black Carbon influences the Arctic climate and the challenge of quantifying the total impact, and finish with some recommendations for future research.
