Dissolved organic carbon in the Tanaelva catchment, Finnmark

“Brown” streams due to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) are characteristic of environments with a lot of bogs and mires. In the last years, we have taken water samples and analyzed DOC contents from a large number of streams in the Tanaelva catchment in Northern Norway.

The idea of the thesis is to statistically relate measured DOC contents to the landcover characteristics of the stream’s catchment, for example, tundra, forests, and mires with and without permafrost. For this purpose, the European-wide CORINE landcover classification can be used, as well as maps of peatlands with permafrost in Northern Norway.

The thesis requires good skills in GIS, as well as basic statistical methods. It is also possible to collect and analyze own water samples during fieldwork in Northern Norway, in collaboration with the “Center for Biogeochemistry in the Anthropocene” (www.mn.uio.no/cba/).
