Crustal structure and development of the Vesterålen/Senja Margin

The thesis will investigate a poorly explored section of the Norwegian margin located at the transition between Vesterålen and the western Barents Sea. The work will model seismic travel times resulting in a P-wave velocity transect, showing crustal thickness and seismic velocity variations within the crust. This will be used to discuss processes relating to continental breakup and margin development, early seafloor spreading, and crystalline crustal structure onshore.

Seismic data encompass seismometer data from instruments either deployed at the seafloor (5 instruments, good data), or land stations densely deployed across the Senja island and the adjacent mainland (70 instruments, but about 30 good data sets).

The work will consist of basic processing of wide-angle seismic data using e.g. Seismic Unix, interpretation of seismic arrival times, and the construction of a velocity model by use of ray-tracing (Rayinvr). Maps and other figures will be made using GMT, a versatile and popular open source program package (
