Interaction between groundwater and surface water in urban areas

Urbanization has significantly changed hydrological processes. The most important change is that the impermeable surface reduces infiltration and eventually reduces groundwater recharge.

The decline in groundwater level will change interaction between groundwater and surface water bodies, such as rivers and the sea. This may lead to damage to infrastructures and pollution of groundwater.

This master thesis will study groundwater in urban areas. This includes groundwater recharge from rainfall, sewage system and from the surface water bodies. The students will affiliate under two ongoing projects-New Water Ways (https://newwaterways.no/) and Sustainable Urbanization in the Context of Economic Transformation and Climate Change: Sustainable and Liveable Cities and Urban Areas.

The student will contribute to these two projects and gain knowledge about stormwater management at both national and international levels.
