Late Paleocene-Eocene deposition in the northern Sørvestsnaget Basin in relation to uplift/erosion of the Stappen High, SW Barents Sea

Main aims/objectives:
The main purpose of this thesis work is to study a source-to-sink system in the SW Barents Sea: the Late Paleocene-Eocene deposition in the northern Sørvestsnaget Basin in relation to uplift/erosion of the Stappen High. A regional seismic sequence stratigraphic framework will be established, and the interplay between tectonics and sedimentation will be discussed in a local source-to-sink context.

Data: 2D/3D seismic data, well data

Methods/tools: Seismic interpretation using Petrel, Interpretation of log data

Work plan:

  • Interpretations of regional 2D seismic lines
  • Seismic to well ties, stratigraphic calibration
  • Detailed interpretation of the upper Paleocene-Eocene succession (2D/3D seismic)
  • Sequence stratigraphic analysis
  • Constraining the Paleogene uplift/erosion history of the Stappen High
  • Synthesis: Late Paleocene-Eocene basin evolution in a source-to-sink context
