Cyclostratigraphy in the Ordovician of the Oslo Region

Cyclicity in sedimentary successions attributable to astronomical forcing (Milankovich cycles) has now been described from throughout the world and from many geological periods. This gives us an extremely powerful tool for stratigraphical dating and correlation. Such cycles have been suggested but never investigated for several formations in the Ordovician of the Oslo Region (especially the Vollen Formation).

The project will consist in visual and magnetic susceptibility logging of alternating limestone-shale successions in the Oslo area, and cores from the Langesund area. Supplementary data may include biostratigraphy (fossils) and geochemistry (especially carbonate content).

The data analysis will involve time series methods such as spectral and wavelets analysis.
