Biological agents and genetically modified organisms

When you are working with biological agents and GMOs, it is important that you know the precautions related to classification, risk assessment, waste management and pathogen safety datasheets, as well as have the necessary training.

Working with Biological agents

Work with biological agents class 2 has to be approved by The Norwegian Work Authorities (Arbeidstilsynet).

Working with Genetically modified organisms

Work with GMO has to be approved by the Norwegian Health Authorities (Helsedirektoratet).

At IBV we have laboratories for GMO plants, animals and microorganisms.

Classification of biological agents

Bildet kan inneholde: vann, gjennomsiktig materiale, grønn, lys, glass.List of classified biological agents (smitterisikogrupper) is available at Lovdata

Datasheets for pathogens

Patogen Safety Data Sheets (PSDSs) describe pathogens and give recommendations for safe handling.

Risk assessment

All work including biological agents and GMO's must be risk assessed in the form of an SOP.

Biosafety cabinets

A biosafety cabinet offers protection for both user and sample/product.

Hazardous waste

UiO is practising zero waste to drain. In other words, NO biological agents, GMOs or its plasmids should be poured down the drain. All waste is to be handled as hazardous waste.

The waste is handled by professional renovator, as it transported to Klemetsrudanlegget (Fortum Waste Solutions Norway AS). The waste is incinerated immediately upon arrival.
