Procedure for waste management, including laboratory waste

The procedure shall ensure correct disposal of waste, including laboratory waste.

The procedure applies for all areas in the department.

Responsibilty

The Estate Department (EA) is responsible for all waste disposal contracts.
The Head of Department is responsible for this procedure; that it is up to date and is available.
All employees and students are responsible for correct waste disposal.

Method

For general waste disposal see: Estate Departement's web pages.

Laboratory waste

Waste from laboratory work, should never be emptied in the sink.

Hazardous Waste

Waste disposal after laboratory work should be documented in each SOP.

Yellow hazardous waste containers:

To be filled with:

  • Small, yellow hazardous waste containers for needles, scalpel blades and other sharps
  • Pipette tips, plastic waste, small volumes of chemical waste, electrophoresis gels etc.
  • Waste from work with biological agents; bacteria, fungi, virus, animal cells  (incl. GMM, cultures, media, agar plates). All disposables that has been in contact with biological agents, such as pipette tips, tubes etc. must also be disposed in these containers
  • Potentially contagious waste, such as blood, serum and urine.
  • Empty chemical bottles/containers.

The hazardous waste containers are collected by renovator and incinerated at Klemetsrud.

Needles/Sharps

  • Needles and sharps must not be re-capped, due to risk of puncture wounds.

  • The needles are disposed in small yellow containers. These are disposed in the large hazardous waste containers.

Disposal of large hazardous waste containers

Full and sealed yellow hazardous waste containers are placed in the risk room (riskavfallsburet) by the loading ramp at Georg Morgenstiernes (GM) hus.
The code to the lock will be given after local training.
The renovator collects waste once a week.

Laboratory glassware and empty chemical containers

This type of glassware has a much higher melting point than ordinary glassware and should be disposed of in large hazardous waste containers. This also applies to empty chemical glass flasks/containers.

Empty gas containers

Separate blue waste container for propane/butane/methane gas containers and containers for aerosols (spray containers can be found in the backyard of KB-hus. Containers with TOXIC, CORROSIVE or OXIDISING substances should be disposed as chemical waste.

Chemical waste = dangerous waste

See separate procedure

Other wastes

Porcelain and ceramic waste

Separate waste containers for porcelain and ceramic waste can be found in the backyard of KB-hus (see picture above).

Styrofoam, wood and metal

Styrofoam, wood and metal are disposed in separate containers below the loading ramp at GM-hus.

EE waste

All EE waste should be sorted and placed in the "miljø" station inside by the loading ramp in GM-hus. The IT-department accepts used/broken computer equipment

Normal waste

All other wastes (plastic, food waste, other waste, metal/glass) are sorted at the recycling stations placed in common areas in KB-hus.
If these are not sufficient there is a large trash compactor that can be found in the backyard at KB. The trash compactor is labelled with a GREY sticker.
You will also find larger containers for plastic and glass/metal in the backyard.

Paper/cardboard

Paper waste is collected in "miljøesker" in the offices/laboratories. These can be emptied in the larger paper container by the main elevators on Wednesdays.
If these are not sufficient there is a large paper compactor that can be found in the backyard at KB. The paper compactor is labelled with a BROWN sticker.
