New face: Pierre Chymkowitch

We are happy that Pierre Chymkowitch joined IBV as an Associate Professor at the section for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) earlier this year.

It is my pleasure to join UiO to serve as Associate Professor at the Department of Biosciences.

I was born in France where I obtained a PhD degree from the University of Strasbourg in 2008. My research was focused on unraveling the origin of gene expression defects in patients with rare genetic disorders like Xeroderma pigmentosum. I then moved to Oslo at the Department of Microbiology at Oslo University Hospital. For the next eight years, I continued my research on gene regulation in the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

The first four years were dedicated to revealing the mechanisms that synchronize cell-cycle progression and gene expression. In the past four years I investigated the mechanisms regulated by the Small Ubiquitin-like Modifier Sumo during transcriptional response to stress, and the role of centromeres in mitotic chromatin compaction.

Further research at the Department

Here, at the Department of Biosciences (BMB section), my group will continue this research on molecular mechanisms regulating gene expression at the level of the chromatin. We are currently following two core axes:

  1. The regulation of gene expression by Sumo during stem cells’ differentiation in humans and mice.
  2. The regulation of gene expression by centromeres in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Our goal is to reveal novel and fundamental mechanisms that regulate chromatin-bound proteins to allow proper cell fate determination and adaptation to intra and extra cellular signals. Doing so, we have identified new potential treatments of obesity, which constitute a major need in developed and rapidly-developing countries.

Feel free to trigger a meeting with me if you are interested in our projects or if you want to discuss about climbing or trail running, which are my favorite hobbies.
